Event description

Description

Notions of the body and embodiment have become prominent across a number of established discipline areas, like philosophy, sociology, psychology, and so on. Likewise, emerging areas in related fields, such as embodied cognition, neuroscience, artificial intelligence, bio-power/bio-politics, and so on, approach the body and embodiment in novel ways, and offer the possibility for innovative contributions to education in general and to educational research in particular. The aim of this symposium is to explore conceptualisations of the body and embodiment in related fields with respect to contemporary approaches and insights. The symposium aims not only to address the paradigmatic shift toward questions of the body and embodiment in education and educational research from a theoretical and philosophical perspective, it also aims to intersect with the diverse interests of education researchers and practitioners.

This event will bring together a range of highly distinguished academics to present their research on the symposium theme. Co-sponsored by the School of Education at La Trobe Univeristy and the Australian Association for Reseach in Education (AARE), the symposium will be held at the City Campus of La Trobe University.

Our goal as convenors (convenor: Dr. S. Stolz (La Trobe University) and co-convenor: Dr. M.Toscano (University of Melbourne)) is to intentionally attract a diverse audience that is made up of members from the AARE special interest group (i.e. "Educational Theory and Philosophy"), academics, post-graduate students, educators, and members from the general public who may be interested in the symposium theme.

The key-note presentation will be delivered by Prof. Lawrence Shapiro (University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA).
