About this event
Floods, a global pandemic and international uncertainty has brought tough times to rural and regional areas, but we’ve also seen bright young minds step up for their communities. The Sir Earle Page Memorial Trust Lecture allows funds to be raised to present to a deserving young student from regional NSW giving them the opportunity to undertake a degree at the University of Sydney.
“Without scholarship patrons... students such as myself would not be as easily able to pursue education in such demanding fields, let alone dream of doing so in a city far from their country home.”
Jorga Attard - The Sir Earle Page Memorial Trust Scholarship Recipient, 2018
Hear from this year’s guest lecturer General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK AC (Mil) CVO MC (Retd) whose life of service is a true inspiration – from the jungles of the Vietnam War to the peacekeeping mission in East Timor and later as Australia’s 26th Governor-General.

About Sir Earle Page:
Earle Page won the only exhibition into the University of Sydney Medical School then available – the Struth Exhibition, worth £50 a year for five years.
The scholarship was only available once every five years. So, to be eligible to win it at the next opportunity, young Earle was “bundled down” to Sydney High School to do his honours in matriculation.
To win the scholarship, he had to simultaneously study his first-year Arts honours course at school – and had to be first in general proficiency in first-year Arts.
He succeeded in that quest and so won the scholarship.
He then commenced at the University of Sydney (in knickerbockers because of "the absence of cash at home” meant he had to wear them out before graduating to long trousers). He was “only fifteen and not fully grown”.
Despite the challenges, Earle Page graduated top of his year at the age of 21, and went on to lead an incredible life.
He truly is an inspiration to all bright, young country minds.
