Since 2013, the Southeast Asia Design Research (SEA-DR) Conference has served as a pivotal platform, fostering collaboration among researchers and graduate students across Southeast Asia to exchange insights and experiences in the application of design-based research methodology in education.

Notably, host universities in Indonesia have joined forces to lead the advancement and adaptation of Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) through the Pendidikan Matematika Realistik Indonesia (PMRI).

From its inception, the SEA-DR conferences have received steadfast support from colleagues at the Freudenthal Institute in Utrecht. What began as a regional collaboration has evolved into a global endeavour, with the International Steering Committee and Keynote Speakers representing countries such as Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Japan, and Singapore. This expansion underscores the conferences' growing influence and the diverse perspectives contributing to the discourse on design-based research in education.

Deakin University is proud to host the 10th Southeast Asia Design Research Conference in 2024 - Deakin University's 50th anniversary year.

Keynote Speakers

Zsolt Lavicza

Johannes Keppler University, Austria

Fostering Teachers' Innovations: Integrating Augmented/Virtual Reality and 3D Printing into Teacher Education.

Zsolt Lavicza has worked on several research projects examining technology and mathematics teaching in classroom environments at the Universities of Michigan and Cambridge. In addition, Zsolt has greatly contributed to the development of the GeoGebra community and participated in developing research projects on GeoGebra and related technologies worldwide. Currently, Zsolt is a Professor in STEAM Education Research Methods at Johannes Kepler University’s Linz School of Education. From JKU he is working on numerous research projects worldwide related to technology integration into schools; leading the doctoral programme in STEAM Education; teaching educational research methods and coordinating research projects around the world.

Adi Nur Cahyono

Universitas Negeri Semarang, Indonesia

Design Research on Math Trails with Digital Technologies: From Physical Environments to Immersive Experiences

Adi Nur Cahyono is an Associate Professor in Mathematics Education Media. He is a civil servant lecturer at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES), Indonesia, since 2008. He is also an Expert Staff of the Rector of UNNES for Academic Affairs in 2019-2021 and Head of the Sub Directorate of Reputation and Partnership of UNNES since 2023. In 2017, he received his doctoral degree (Dr.rer.nat.) from J.W.v. Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main, Germany, in the speciality of Didactics of Mathematics for his work on the MathCityMap Indonesia. He teaches and supervises undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students in mathematics education media, geometry, and teaching & learning mathematical modelling. He is the founder and leader of the Math Trails Media Research Group, where he and his team conduct research and work with a focus on math trails, mathematical modelling, and mathematics education with digital technologies in collaboration with teachers and researchers from other institutions in Indonesia and abroad. He is a nominee for the 2023 National Academic Leader Awards in Education. In 2021 and 2023, he became a Visiting Professor at Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz Austria.

Professor Maija Aksela

University of Helsinksi, Finland

Professor Maija Aksela has over 30 years of experience in science education and teacher education in Finland. She has three duties: she is the Director of the national LUMA Centre Finland (a network of 12 Finnish science and technology universities - LUMA is abbreviated from “luonnontieteet”, the Finnish word for natural sciences, and “mathematics”), which was recently awarded the Global Best Awards 2018 as Europe’s best programme bridging the gap between working life and STEM education at schools. She is also Director of the University of Helsinki’s Science Education Centre (a part of LUMA Centre Finland) and Director of the Unit of Chemistry Teacher Education in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Helsinki.

Professor Aksela has used design-based research in her research projects since the year 2002. Many research projects support both formal and non-formal science education in the context of LUMA Centre Finland. For example, professor Aksela is in charge of the large LUMA Finland program of the LUMA Centre during the years 2014–19 that is sponsored by the Finnish Ministry of Education.

Professor Aksela has published over 400 papers and books. She has many international collaborative tasks and activities, for example she was Finland’s representative of the ALLEA (ALL European Academies) working group on Science Education for ten years. Professor Aksela has received altogether 17 honours or awards.

Professor Fou Lai Lin

National Taiwan Normal University, Taiwan

Professor Fou Lai Lin is an Emeritus Professor in mathematics education at National Taiwan Normal University. He is the Founding Editor-in-Chief of several prestigious journals including International Journal of Science and Mathematics Education and Chinese Journal of Science Education. He was the former president of International Group of Psychology of Mathematics Education (PME) (2007-2010). His significant contributions to the mathematics and science education academic communities were recognised in numerous awards such as Distinguished Research Awards and Lifetime Achievement Awards.
