We all have interesting stories to tell about our lives – but how do we choose which ones are worth writing down?

In this workshop Dr Sian Prior, author of Shy: a memoir and ‘Childless:_ a story of freedom and longing’_ (short-listed for The Age non fiction Book of the Year 2022) will introduce you to some of the key skills and decisions involved in crafting an engaging memoir. Topics covered include:

  • Who is your imagined reader, and what do they need to invest in your story?
  • Which writing ‘voice’ (or voices) should you use to tell your story?
  • What is the ‘story’ behind your ‘situation’?
  • How do you depict vivid ‘characters’ (including real people) on the page?
  • How do you retrieve faded memories?
  • What should you avoid when you’re writing about the self?

Light refreshments provided.
