We are delighted to bring you our next event, a special TEDxCanberraSalon on the theme ‘Empower.’
Empower is, arguably, a word that is overused, misused, and abused. Like any word that is overused, it loses meaning. But what does it mean to be truly empowered? Where does ‘empowerment’ come from? How do we empower ourselves? How do we empower others? And, what’s all this empowerment for anyway?
The core of the word is, of course, power. To empower others, or to be empowered oneself, implies some kind of transfer or exchange of power. Does that always mean winners and losers? Or is it more complex than that?
We are looking forward to exploring these questions, and more, through our Salon format. This will include exploration of topics such as the relationship between empowerment and personal agency, empowerment and the modern citizen, and power dynamics.
Many of us feel that our lives and our world are becoming increasingly complex and volatile. Our ability to influence events around us is sometimes difficult to appreciate or enact. We hope this first TEDxCanberraSalon event for 2017 will provide an opportunity for attendees to consider what empowerment means for them, and leave with deeper insights into how they can live an empowered life.
What you can expect
TEDxCanberraSalons are intimate events allowing you to mix with a smaller group of fellow attendees. Numbers at this event are limited to 100. You’ll also have the opportunity to engage more deeply with the ideas featured on stage, with the speakers, and other members of the TEDxCanberra community.
We are going to feature three local speakers, Sally Dooley, Ingrid McCarthy, and Richard Keegan; each with a unique perspective on what it means to empower, and be empowered, and what this means in contemporary life. Further details about our speakers will be released shortly. We’ll also screen two TED Talks which align with our theme.
You will also be able to choose between three concurrent workshops, each one exploring a different facet of empowerment. Full details on the workshops are below. All ticket holders will be able to register for their first, second and third preferences for the workshops. Not all attendees will be able to attened their first workshop. Each attend will only be able to attend one workshop only. The catering for event is included in the ticket price and all attenedees will be able to enjoy the tasy morsels from Swirl Catering.
Now you see Me… with Natasha Vanzetti
Everything you’re wanting and dreaming of is waiting for you, but there’s a catch. You have to come out of hiding and show up first. You have to put yourself out there and know what it is you’re going after, so the endless opportunities can find you.
This workshop will help you get clear on your intention and be empowered to go after what you actually want to create. Imagine a life where you show up as who you really want to be, and embrace the ideas you have. A life where you feel courageous enough to step into the power already within you.
Just because it doesn’t exist, doesn’t mean we can’t create it. Come and learn how to do just that.
Empowering your life 1 mindful minute at a time with Rob Hills
This workshop is a practical and experiential way of learning simple but effective mindfulness techniques to empower your life. Mindfulness is focusing on the present moment rather than worrying about things that have happened in the past or being anxious about what may happen in the future. It is a way of bringing more moment-to-moment awareness into your day.
Using mindfulness helps to train your attention to focus more clearly on the task at hand. By applying simple mindfulness techniques you are choosing to stay more present in your life. Benefits can include improved focus, decreased reactivity, greater resilience and a greater sense of connectedness.
#WeThePeople : Digital Democracy or Twitter Kakocracy? with Brook Dixon
We’re on the cusp of great opportunity for unprecedented levels of participation in democracy. New information and communication technology enables citizen engagement and promotion of democracy in ways we have never seen. What do these opportunities promise and how can we ensure we don’t waste the potential? This workshop will explore both the promise and the risk associated with digital democracy, and how we can all participate in shaping this future.
