Event description
Come join an awesome community of Hackers, Hipsters, Hustlers and Humanitarians dedicated to helping refugees settle happily in Australia

About this Event

Techfugees Australia is proud to announce the next Techfugees Sydney Meetup on World Refugee Day 20 June 2019

Every minute 20 people leave everything behind to escape war, persecution or terror.

UN Secretary-General, António Guterres

Techfugees was founded in 2015 to bring the tech start-up and NGO communities together with refugees settling into a new life in Australia.

Our community of 'Hackers, Hipsters, Hustlers and Humanitarians' has grown beyond the first event to further Hackathons and Meetups in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide with our national community launching numerous refugee businesses and social ventures. Our regular meetups in between Hackathons help us to maintain connections and welcome new friends into the Techfugees community.

Since we started Techfugees Australia, we’ve discovered how many senior leaders in our tech community came to Australia as refugees. We shouldn’t have been surprised though: the creativity, tenacity, resilience and resourcefulness needed to survive and thrive as a refugee are exactly the characteristics that make for successful tech leaders, venture capitalists and startup founders.

For our fourth Sydney meetup, we are excited to have as our Guest of Honour, Jamila Gordon, global tech leader, Founder and CEO of Lumachain, who came to Australia as a young refugee from Africa. Jamila has an extraordinary story to share.

Following the talk and fireside chat with Jamila, we will hear from Dor Akech Achiek from Settlement Services International. We'll finish the formal part of the evening with an Open Mic: 'Ask and Offer' session with new and established members of Techfugees community asking or offer for help.

The evening will conclude with have an opportunity to network with startup mentors and other startups launched at Techfugees.

Talk and Fireside Chat with Jamila Gordon, CEO & Founder – Lumachain

We’re honoured to have as our guest speaker Jamila Gordon, CEO and Founder at Lumachain a technology platform that disrupts traditional enterprise supply chains using blockchain, IoT and AI. Jamila has had an incredible career as a tech executive at marquee global brands, like Qantas Airlines and more recently as a Director and Advisor at some of Australia’s most high-profile startups.

Jamila’s professional success is made more remarkable by her personal story. She arrived in Australia at the age of 18 having escaped the Somali civil war alone and being virtually homeless in Kenya. Jamila set about learning English and then studied IT at La Trobe University, before commencing a career that has taken her around the world.

Open Mic: 'Ask and Offer' Session

This is your opportunity to pitch an idea, business or social venture supporting refugees (or employing refugees). Come tell our community about your business and how we can help you achieve your goals. If you have services you can offer the Techfugees community, this is also a great opportunity to step up!

Food and networking with the Experienced Mentors and Advisors

After the formal event closes, we will have an opportunity for to catch up and network with mentors and advisors who support refugee business and social ventures.
