<h1> Session Description</h1><p>In this series of virtual learning sessions, Dr. Fiona Mckenzie, director of <a href="https://www.orangecompass.com.au/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Orange Compass</a>, and Dr. Seanna Davidson, director of <a href="https://www.the-systems-school.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">The Systems School</a>, have teamed up to teach a suite of systems methods aligned with each aspect of <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1RSZg7WUJ36nBT9CE3AjPPj7zacn9Rmqm/view" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">The Systems Change Framework</a>.  </p><p>In this learning series, we&#x27;ll begin by introducing The Systems Change Framework.  Following from that, each week we will teach a minimum of one systems method for an aspect of the Framework. </p><p><strong>Learning Platform</strong></p><p>Participants can engage in real time, or access the recordings. You will receive facilitation guides to apply the methods, and additional resources to support your learning. </p><p>Sessions to be hosted on the zoom platform allowing for virtual community-based distance learning.  We will also hold 1 &#x27;Office Hour&#x27; a week for questions as participants navigate applying the methods in their own contexts. </p><p><strong>When</strong></p><p>Wednesdays, starting October 28th 2020, and running once a week for 8 weeks, ending December 16th 2020. </p><p>9:30am - 11:00am  Melbourne time - This time period, accessible for those in North America. </p><p>*recordings available for those in other time zones </p><h1>Content</h1><h2>WEEK 1 - Introduction to Systems Change Framework and Systemic Change </h2><ul><li>Introduction of The Systems Change framework </li><li>Explore how the aspects of the Framework work together and its non-linear nature </li><li>What is systemic change and how do we engage with it? </li></ul><h2>WEEK 2 - Systems Practice</h2><ul><li>What does it mean to practice? </li><li>How can we practice? </li><li>Self assessment of systems practice </li><li>Systems Practices</li></ul><p>This session will introduce a suite of activities for individual and groups that relate to unpacking behaviours and mindsets using tools such as conversation mapping, reflective writing, and visual mapping.  Of most value is the time spent sitting with and becoming more conscious of our unconscious influences in how we engage in the system. </p><h2>WEEK 3 - Purposeful Engagement</h2><h3>System Mapping 1 - Actor mapping</h3><p>This session will introduce actor mapping – a type of system map that visually portrays key organisations and individuals within a system of interest. It can help identify the diverse stakeholders that may influence an issue and the different connections and relationships between them.</p><h2> WEEK 4 - Reflect, Learn, Adapt</h2><h3>Assumptions testing</h3><p>The process of surfacing and testing assumptions (implicit, hidden, certain, critical) is important to both better understanding a problem and also exploring strategies for dealing with it. Drawing on design thinking, a framework is provided that enables identification and then testing of critical assumptions in a series of simple steps.</p><h3>Developmental Evaluation </h3><p>Developmental Evaluation is a learning process through which we become more aware of and attentive to what is emerging in the system as we engage with it in real time.  It is a critical approach to contending with complexity when there are no defined responses to the issues we are facing.  </p><h2> WEEK 5 - Define Situation</h2><h3>System mapping 2 - Defining the systems purpose</h3><p>Defining the systemic change we want to see must be inherently tied to where we currently are in order to understand how to move from here to there.  In this mapping exercise we identify the key parts of the system and how they interact to create an undesirable outcome.  Clarity on the complexity is the start of our systems journey.  </p><h2>WEEK 6 - Gain Clarity</h2><h3>Rich Pictures</h3><p>Rich pictures are a nimble and adaptable tool to engage in individual mental models and experiences of the system.  They are a valuable tool in collaboratives to help bridge different experiences of the systems and to build a shared understanding and starting point for working together. </p><h3>Journey mapping</h3><p>While we can appreciate that in complexity, things are always changing, we often need to have a sense of ‘how did we get here’.  This process helps to surface and make accessible to a group the dynamics of the system over time by reflecting on key triggers and responses in the system.  </p><h3>9 whys and root causes </h3><p>This is another nimble tool for groups to collectively map and consider contributing factors to the current state of the system, by backcasting from the current state.  We can then analyze this map to consider the types of root causes, thereby offering suggestions for leverage points for change in the system.  </p><h2>WEEK 7 - Find Leverage</h2><h3>System Mapping 3 - Feedback Loops </h3><p>The mapping of feedback loops is a means of better understanding the way(s) the system works, including deep structures and patterns of behaviour and different points of influence or leverage. This session will provide a simplified and practical method for causal loop mapping that can be done collaboratively and applied to any complex challenge.</p><h2>WEEK 8 - Act Strategically</h2><h3>Systems leadership </h3><p>Systems leadership is about drawing upon the emergent and self-organising nature of complex adaptive systems through empowering others (regardless of hierarchy) and continuous re-calibration. This session will explore behaviours and mindsets of systems leadership, as well as practical methods to diagnose adaptive challenges, understand different types of authority and be alert to the role of power.</p><h3>Theory of Change </h3><p>Theory of Change processes guide our learning, testing and course adjustments as we move towards the change we are seeking in the system.  They are a living document that adapts with our system learning over time, and also help to document and communicate to others how we are navigating through the systems and why. </p><h1>Instructors</h1><p>Dr. Fiona McKenzie</p><p>Fiona is a human geographer with a PhD on innovation and expertise in both public policy and academic research. She is the Founder and Director of Orange Compass, a consultancy dedicated to supporting change makers on their journey to transform systems and build better futures. Fiona is respected for her ability to rapidly synthesise complex topics for decision makers and strategically co-design systems change processes with stakeholders. In addition to leading Orange Compass, Fiona works with Collaboration for Impact as a Network Member, where she led the creation of Australia&#x27;s first digital knowledge and learning hub for systems change and collaboration, Platform C. She is an Honorary Associate in the School of Geosciences at the University of Sydney.</p><p>Dr. Seanna Davidson</p><p>Seanna was born in Canada and immigrated to Australia in 2015.  She is now based on Wadawarrung country on the traditional and unceded lands of the Kulin Nation.  Seanna is a systems practitioner and process designer and works with individuals and groups to unpack complex problems through the use of systems thinking, reflective practice and action learning. Seanna’s mission is to build capacity for systems thinking because she believes that profound systems change begins from where we stand in the system. A human geographer by training, Seanna’s work draws across disciplines to explore and uncover patterns and change within social spaces. Seanna is currently the director of The Systems School, and previously the Manager of Systems Thinking and Capacity Building with The Australian Prevention Partnership Centre.  </p>
