About this Event

Welcome to Synth Surfers - The Bega Valley Synth Fest!

A day and night full of electronic wonder!

Suitable for all ages however children under 14 need to be chaperoned by an adult.

The day is full of workshops to learn everything from DIY synth coding to Ableton Live to learning VCV Rack a free modular software synthesiser.

There are displays of a variety of instruments and synthesiser formats all set up ready for you to try and play on.

There will be over 10 different demonstrations of various technology including lasers! LASERS!!!!

As the sun goes down OSCILLATIONS - a night of eclectic electronia rises. With local artists playing alongside artists from further afield covering genres from ambient to noise to block-rockin-beats all tastes are catered for to help you boogie into the night.

There are two ticket options depending on if you want to come along for the day and night or just come and boogie in the evening.

Workshops from 10am-3pm (Limited places) When you choose your ticket choose your add on.

10am - 12pm: Synthesis and sound design in Ableton Live

This workshop will give you a basic introduction into subtractive synthesis using the Ableton Live and the Simpler instrument. Paired with a Push controller you will learn the fundamentals of synthesis including looking at waveforms, filters and modulation. • Max 4 participants• 2 hour workshop• Workshop facilitator: Scott Baker

12pm-1pm: Lunetta Synthesis

Join Adam Buckley as he gives you an introduction to the basics of creating your own synthesiser using the Lunetta Synth Cookbook. The Lunetta is an electronic instrument that uses primarily CMOS chips for gates, Boolean logic, and mathematical functions for sequenced sounds. A Lunetta is basically a simple rhythmic modular musical computer that makes abstract sounds in sometimes unpredictable ways. It is a beautiful experimental synthesizer. This workshop will give you the basics of electronic circuits for sound creation.• Max 5 participants • 1hr workshop• Workshop facilitator: Adam Buckley

1pm-2pm: Littlebits - synths, blinky lights and stuff

“All objects in the world secretly want to become musical instruments. It would be mean of us not to help them”

Join creative technologist and sound artist, Rodney Berry in an intense making session. Rodney will bring his epic play-set, including Little Bits (a modular electronic construction set - like a Lego set for creating and responding to sound, light and movement)

and probably some noisy Japanese kids’ toys and other odds and ends.

Suitable for kids and adults aged 8 and up (younger ones welcome but need an adult with them since we may use some pointy and fragile things). Limit: 10 people

What to bring: Anything that might help in constructing something: cardboard coloured paper Blu-tak, rubber bands, icy-pole sticks, skewers, lego, meccano, k’nex etc., battery-powered things or toys that move and/or make sound. Scissors, sticky tape etc.

Max 10 participants • 1hr workshop• Workshop facilitator: Rodney Berry

2pm-3pm: Intro to VCV Rack

VCV Rack is a free open-source virtual modular synthesiser: multiple modules can be connected to synthesise a sound. By default the software contains several VCOs, LFOs, mixers, and other standard synthesiser modules, however more can be added as plugins through the VCV Rack website. Myst Mach will take you through getting started and show you the basics of this amazing software! Max 5 participants • 1hr course• Workshop facilitator: Myst Mach

Displays and Demos From 10am - 4pm

James Hebden - James will be bringing his DIY large format (Moog) modular synth. This is a beast to behold!
