DATA SALON #8

Indigenous Data Sovereignty

September's Data Salon will be led by Nathan Sentance and Jazz Money, exploring a range of issues including the digitisation of Indigenous cultural objects, stories and knowledges and decolonial approaches to archival practices and institutions.

Nathan "Mudyi" Sentance is a Wiradjuri man from the Mowgee clan who grew up on Darkinjung Country, NSW. Nathan is a proud descendant of Diana Mudgee. He currently works as project officer in First Nations programming at the Australian Museum. Nathan works to ensure that the cultural and historical narratives conveyed by cultural and memory institutions, such galleries, libraries, archives and museums (GLAM) have First Nations perspectives and that First Nations stories being told are being told and controlled by First Nations people. This is to balance the biases and misinterpretations of Aboriginal culture and people that has been previously set by GLAM institutions. Nathan's website.

Jazz Money is an award winning poet, filmmaker and educator of Wiradjuri heritage, currently based on the beautiful land of the Gundungurra and Darug nations. She works as a freelance writer and digital producer specialising in storytelling and community collaboration. Jazz has written about data sovereignty for NAVA and was previously a Digital Producer at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia. Jazz is the 2020 winner of the David Unaipon prize. The Sydney Culture Data Salon is a bi-monthly meet-up for cultural workers interested or involved in the use of cultural data. The Salon provides a unique forum to share experiences, strategies and tools. With invited talks and discussions, this series explores how data-led research and innovation can inform strategic planning and daily decision making.
