Snorkel with Giant Cuttlefish. Stony Point (near Whyalla) within the Cuttlefish Coast Sanctuary Zone. Guided Snorkel Days - 30th June - 1, 2 & 3rd July 2016

Join in the fun of this family event and swim with the techni-coloured carpet of Giant Australian Cuttlefish at Stony Point within Cuttlefish Coast Sanctuary Zone near Whyalla! A safe and supervised snorkelling experience for the whole family. Toasty warm 7mm wetsuits with hood, boots and gloves will be provided by EMS and Whyalla Dive Services.

Funding support from Natural Resources Eyre Peninsula has made it possible to reduce price for this experience by upto 50% Be quick! Booking out fast! 50% off is now available only to those who can bring their own snorkel gear and 5-7mm wetsuit.


What to expect?

Experienced snorkel instructors will assist you to fit snorkel gear and then give a briefing of snorkel site and where EMS team has seen large congregations of cuttlefish. Groups (of 6 max) with leader will then go for a tour of the cuttlefish breeding area. Be ready to experience 100's of breeding giant cuttlefish putting on a colourful show. We encourage you to bring your own snorkel gear and wetsuit but will also have limited loan gear available on day.


Adults must accompany children under 15yrs

Suitable for children 8 years and above whom are good swimmers. Children under 15 yrs must be supervised by a parent/adult at 2:1 ratio (2 children : 1 parent/adult). (see below in event description for more information).

Join professional snorkel leaders and marine biologists for a guided snorkel at Stony Point within the Cuttlefish Coast Sanctuary Zone. The reef is home to an amazing variety of colourful fish, dolphins, plant life and the amazing breeding congregation of Giant Australian cuttlefish.

Suitable for children 8 years and above whom are good swimmers. Children under 15 yrs must be accompanied in water & supervised by a parent/adult at 2:1 ratio (2 children : 1 parent/adult). 

Depth ranges from 2-6m. Trained snorkel guides lead the tours and are often accompanied by student or qualified marine biologists.

Please arrive at EMS equipmemt trailer/ rego desk (at Stony Point) at least 30 minutes before start time to fill out out registration form and be fitted with wetsuit/snorkel gear. Click here for map showing Stony Point.

FAQs

What is the accommodation?

EMS has booked 1 and 2 bedroom apartments at the Palms Apartments. All apartments include reverse cycle air-conditioning, 42" plasma TV's, Austar, and fully equipped kitchens. The complex also provides swipe pass car park entry and 24 hour CCTV security. For further information on the Palm Apartments, please visit www.palmswhyalla.com.au


What does registration fee include?

Full fee ($50) includes guided tour & wetsuit/snorkel gear (including hood, gloves and booties) if required. You are urged to bring your own wetsuit and snorkel gear if you have it. Half price deal (promo 'owngear') requires participant to bring their own wetsuit and snorkel gear.


Where do I meet to take part in tour?

EMS team will have a registration table set up at Stony Point carpark. A map can be found here and also on website here


Is there an age limit to enter the event?

The event is open to children 8 years and above. All children 15 yrs and under must be accompanied in water by an adult/parent.

 

What can I bring to the event?

Bring your own wetsuit and snorkeling gear (if you dont have your own snorkeling equipment we can provide limited number if you pay full prive $50). It will be cold after snorkel so please bring warm clothing/blanket and a thermos with your favourite hot drink.

 

Do you need to have snorkeling experience? 

You dont need snorkeling experience but you do need to be a good swimmer. Larger groups will be broken down to smaller groups with similair experienced snorkellers in each group - this allows more assistance to those who require it.


What if sea conditions/weather is not suitable for snorkelling?

We have a plan B site that can be snorkelled safely if too windy at Stony Point (see map here). Bad weather - EMS team will monitor sea/weather conditions the week leading up to the snorkel sessions -   if not suitable for snorkelling all participants will be contacted via email no less than 24hrs before their booked snorkel tour to let them know that sessions have been re-scheduled. Participants will be given option to re-schedule or receive refund.


Refund policy 

EMS Team requires 24 hrs notice of cancellation for snorkel tours and accommodation. There is no refund if less than 24hrs given.

Experiencing Marine Sanctuaries Inc.

Safe and supervised 'in water' experiences of our unique marine life and habitat.

Experiencing Marine Sanctuaries (EMS) is an incorporated, not-for-profit community organisation.

EMS snorkel events are Proudly supported by the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges NRM Board and DEWNR Marine Parks.

The program is based on the highly successful New Zealand program ‘Experiencing Marine Reserves’.  

Our EMS snorkel leaders are qualified snorkelling instructors and offer guidance, direction and coordination of our snorkel experiences.

EMS provides mask (goggles), snorkel, fins (flippers) and wetsuits (these are limited so please bring your own if you can). 

The EMS program is designed for adults and children (5 years and above), parents & grandparents that are interested in experiencing and learning about SA’s unique marine life and habitats. Participants 14 and under need to be accompanied in water by a parent.

Snorkel tours typically last for around 30-45 minutes. Registration, gear allocation and snorkel safety briefing can take up to 30 minues before snorkel tour.
