Supervision Masterclass - Preventing Supervision Drift (online)

Online event
Tuesday, Jul 28 from 9 am to 5 pm AEST
Overview

Masterclass on identifying and managing supervision power dynamics and drift within clinical supervision practice

This masterclass provides a an overview of best practice in supervision and some of the ways in which supervision can go astray.

All PsyBA-approved supervisors are required to attend at least one masterclass every 5 years to maintain their supervisor status. Attendance at this workshop satisfies that requirement.

This Supervision Master Class introduces supervisors to the notion of “supervision drift” (Pugh & Margetts, 2020) that could arise when supervision no longer satisfies its core functions. The session also discusses power dynamics in the supervisory process that contribute to supervision drift and unhelpful ways that supervisors (Hawthorne, 1975) and supervisees (Kadushin, 1968) manage these power imbalances. The session also aims to provide clear and practical strategies to safeguard against supervision drift and manage power imbalances so that supervision remains effective and helpful, especially for the supervisee. The strategies introduced will come from three key areas, including ongoing supervisor self-reflections, appropriate supervision structure and effective work with supervisees.

As part of PsyBA and AHPRA requirements, there will be a quiz at the end of the master class which participants will need to successfully complete.

Digital copies of the slides and handouts will be provided prior to the workshop.

The workshop is presented online via the zoom platform. We will require all participants to switch their cameras on for the duration of the training and will also require participants to communicate with each other in small break-out groups via both video and audio for interactive sessions throughout the day. If circumstances require cancelling or rescheduling the masterclass, we will endeavour to provide as much notice as possible.

Presenter: Dr Chien Hoong Gooi, Clinical Psychologist & Board-approved Supervisor Trainer
