Student Workshop: 10.00am to 3.00pm
The 2017 Summer School will consist of a series of mini-lectures, workshops and discussion sessions. These sessions will be conducted by experienced debaters who will demonstrate the three key aspects of debating – matter, manner and method. The requirements of each of these areas become more extensive as debaters progress through the grades of the Schools Competition and, as such, the student workshop through its tiered discussion programme is highly valuable for both novice and seasoned debaters alike.
Coaches are encouraged to attend these seminars, as direction will be given with respect to the criteria used by adjudicators in grading a debater’s performance.
An attendance fee of $20 per student is payable on arrival. The QDU encourages students to pre purchase tickets to this event. The QDU requests that schools send teachers, coaches or parents as well to supervise their students, entry for parents/guardians to the student sessions is free.
Coaching Workshop: 10.00am to 12.00pm
Good coaching can make all the difference to debaters. The support and knowledge that a coach offers can significantly raise debating performance and, just as importantly, enjoyment of the debating experience.
What are Coaching Seminars?
The QDU offers Coaches’ Seminars at the beginning of the year to instruct coaches in both the mechanics of QDU debating and in techniques and strategies for helping students achieve their full potential. They also provide a useful forum for sharing ideas, answering questions and facilitating communication between schools and the QDU. Conducted by experienced coaches, these seminars have received excellent feedback from participants.
Who should attend?
The coaching seminars are an extremely useful learning tool for both beginner and advanced coaches. Depending on the attendees we usually run with the following two seminars:
Beginners: Basic debating overview, preparation techniques, style and content advice, training games and activities for younger debaters.
Advanced: Strategic case preparation for older levels, development of more sophisticated argumentation based on more advanced analytical techniques such as group segmentation, focus on tactical debating including strategic use of definitions, models and caselines.
