Summer Fruit Tree Pruning

The Urban Food Programme, created by the Darebin Information Volunteer & Resource Service, in August 2014, is the practical application of goals in home food growing, community gardening, urban food production and integrated approaches to planning urban food programmes.The Urban Food Programme's mission is to use existing urban food resources (public and private) to improve food security, and in particular to harvest the urban orchard and provide fresh food to DIVRS and other food relief agencies. The programme will create a more sustainable community by re-localising food production, distribution and consumption.The Urban Food Programme includes the delivery of theDarebin Fruit Squad, the establishment of theBackyard BasicsProject and the leadership of volunteer positions in Fresh Food and Food Sourcing as part of the Emergency Relief Foodstore augmentation.

DIVRS Urban Food Programme

Traditionally orchards are pruned during the dormant winter months, but there are great benefits to pruning after the harvest in summer. Learn and practice your pruning skills with expert supervision, working in the farm orchard.
Merrin Layden is a horticulturalist who has spent the past 5 years working at The Orchard Project in London teaching urban fruit tree skills, and now delivers training for community groups all over Melbourne.
Morning tea provided. BYO secateurs and gardening gloves.
Dress for the weather and the farm environment.
