About this event

As educators, it is crucial that we equip ourselves with the knowledge and skills to identify students who may be at risk and provide them with the necessary support.

In this training session, you will gain valuable insights and practical strategies that will enable you to recognise warning signs, offer support, and help prevent suicide among your students. Here's what you can expect to learn:

  • Definition of Suicide: Develop a deep understanding of suicide, its impact, and the significance of early intervention.
  • Risk Factors and Warning Signs: Learn to identify the risk factors associated with suicide and recognize the subtle warning signs exhibited by students in distress.
  • What Helps and What Doesn't: Acquire knowledge about the most effective approaches to support students who are struggling with suicidal thoughts, as well as the common misconceptions that can hinder the process.
  • The Referral Framework: Discover a practical framework for further identifying warning signs and determining when to involve an appropriate person or support service.
  • Post-Interaction Support: Learn how to access the necessary support and resources following an interaction with a student who has expressed thoughts of suicide.

This is not a formal suicide intervention training but more an awareness training for teachers, therefore there will be no expectation that you carry out a risk assessment. This presentation will instead help you identify students at risk and then confidently ask some basic questions so you know where you can refer to.

By participating in this training, you will gain the confidence to engage in open conversations with students, ask essential questions, and refer them to the appropriate channels for further assistance.
