The WA Made Film Festival’s Student Showcase offers an exciting glimpse into the future of filmmaking in Western Australia.

Featuring emerging voices and fresh perspectives, these short films explore big ideas around identity, grief, ambition and moral choice across a range of genres. From grounded drama and psychological thrillers to sci-fi and dark comedy, the showcase highlights the creativity, skill and storytelling confidence of the next generation of WA filmmakers as they step onto the big screen.

  • Codicia

A young man entrenched in organised crime reflects on the sacrifices he has made and the cost of his choices.

  • Magnum Opus

Samuel, a retired artist, attempts to reconnect with his estranged daughter, Celeste, an art curator, by creating a painting for her important upcoming exhibition. As conflict with Celeste worsens, so does his painting process.

  • Adrift

After the death of his wife, a veteran astronaut accepts a high-risk solo mission to save humanity’s future - only to realize the true cost may be losing his son forever.

  • Alma

Ain Khan and Nancy Shamu Isolated and caught in the monotony of routine, Alma feels disconnected from the world around her, even from her large extended family.

  • Shadows and Deception

When detective Vince Malone is hired by a mysterious girl to find her missing sister, he uncovers a theatre run by a corrupt kingpin who controls half the city.

  • To Get to the Other Side

An aspiring comedian is fired from her last gig and, as a result, meets a charming chicken who convinces her to follow her dreams.

  • The Painter

A failed painter attempts to create her final masterpiece while descending into madness, blurring the line between inspiration and
self-destruction.

  • Tidal

Detective Shawn struggles to deal with his emotions and journeys through the five stages of grief. While Shawn begins to accept his grief, we uncover that the loss of his wife is not the only reason behind his sorrow.

  • Holding

A dark, psychological short film exploring obsession disguised as affection. The story follows Honey, a detached, calm girl with a growing fixation on Lily, a kind, carefree socialite.

  • Dottie

Felix is given the chance to join the coolest gang in school but there is a problem. In order to achieve what he has always wanted, Felix has to betray his one and only friend. Dottie tells the tale of Felix’s fateful decision.
