Stories, Solidarity & Cake

Stories, Solidarity & Cake

Overview

A Night of Resistance, Celebration & Community.

This isn't just another fundraiser. This is a celebration of what happens when communities refuse to let their stories be extracted for free.

We're celebrating Dung and Doug's birthdays (yes, they share a birthday week!), honoring the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, and raising funds to keep Our Race Community fighting for story sovereignty.

Think: performances by Story Holders (paid, of course), birthday cake with a side of politics, story sharing circles, a silent auction, and a collective commitment to keeping ethical storytelling alive.

Why March 28?

March 21 is the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Seven days later, we gather to celebrate resistance, remember what we're fighting for, and resource the work that keeps going.

This is also the week Dung and Doug turn another year older. Another year of refusing to compromise. Another year of paying Story Holders. Another year standing in solidarity.

The best birthday gift? Keeping Our Race's lights on.

What to Expect

🎤 Performances by Story Holders

Story Holders will share their creativity through performance, music, and spoken word. And yes, they're getting paid for it, because that's how we operate.

🎂 Birthday Cake (with a side of politics)

We're celebrating Dung and Doug, but this isn't your typical birthday party. Expect cake, sure. But also expect conversations about liberation, story sovereignty, and what it actually costs to practice ethics.

💬 Story Sharing Circles

Space for community members to share what Our Race has meant to them, why ethical storytelling matters, and what we're building together.

🎁 Silent Auction

Bid on items, experiences, and services donated by community artists and businesses. Every dollar raised keeps Our Race operating ethically.

Want to donate to the auction? Email admin@ourrace.com.au

🤝 Community & Connection

This is a space to meet others who believe stories are precious and belong to the people who hold them. Connect, celebrate, and commit to the work ahead.

Why We're Fundraising

Let's be direct: Our Race needs financial support to keep operating.

Here's what we refuse to compromise on:

  • Paying Story Holders for sharing their expertise
  • Providing free workshops for communities historically exploited
  • Maintaining consent and co-design processes
  • Standing in solidarity even when it's uncomfortable
  • Operating with transparency and integrity

But ethical practice costs money.

While other organisations use unpaid "volunteer stories" to boost their brand, we pay. While others extract, we resource. While others perform values, we practice them.

If you've followed Our Race over the years, you know we usually raise funds for other causes. We've stood for Palestine. We've supported communities facing injustice. We've directed resources where they're needed most.

This year, we're asking for ourselves. Because we can't keep doing this work if we don't keep our own lights on.

How Your Ticket Helps

Every ticket purchased supports: ✓ Paying the Story Holders performing tonight ✓ Covering event costs (venue, food, resources) ✓ Funding Our Race's operations through the year ✓ Keeping workshops free for Story Holders ✓ Maintaining our commitment to ethical practice

Stories are not free. They are precious. They belong to the people who hold them.

On March 28, we celebrate that truth. We honor the people who've trusted us with their stories. We commit to the ongoing work of story sovereignty. And yes, we eat cake.
