Stata Part 1: Getting Started

In this hands-on workshop, using a health-related dataset, participants will be introduced to Stata’s features and learn the basics which are essential for new users of Stata. This course will focus on how to use Stata to

• Input and output data.

• View your data.

• Create new variables.

• Produce simple summary statistics.

• Create simple graphs.

• Provide advice for checking data.

• Write your own programs to edit your data and run your analysis.

Throughout the day there will be time to practice learned techniques and to ask questions. There will also be the option of progressing at your pace.

Participants are required to bring their own laptop to the workshop. If you do not have Stata (version 16 or 17) installed on your laptop please indicate when you enrol in the workshop, and we will provide you with a temporary Stata 17 license. Participants can use Stata on demand if they are familiar with accessing the package and are able to resolve any issues with its use on their laptop.

Prerequisites

The workshop assumes that you are not familiar with Stata.

Who should attend?

PhD students and early career researchers within the Faculty of Health. The day would suit people currently involved in, or about to start, postgraduate study and other researchers who wish to expand their quantitative research skills.
