St Kilda Penguin Viewing Sessions

Actions and Detail Panel

Event description
Ranger-facilitated penguin viewing sessions by Parks Victoria and Earthcare St Kilda, bookings required

About this event

Join a Parks Victoria and Earthcare St Kilda led viewing experience of the penguin colony at St Kilda Breakwater. The nightly tours offer a chance to view some of the 1400 penguins that call the breakwater home from a safe distance as they interact with each other, preen themselves and, depending on the season, tend to their young.

You’ll also experience great views of Melbourne’s city backdrop and Port Phillip as you wait for the penguins to come ashore for the night.

This is a free and self-guided experience. Staff will be onsite to manage group size and safety and to answer all your questions. The breakwater and penguin viewing area are closed to the general public unless on a tour.

Important notes

Bookings are essential for all group members including children. Please arrive 10-15 minutes before your start time to allow time to check in, as tours will start promptly and we are unable to accommodate late arrivals.

From 1st April 2021, spaces for this experience have increased from 30 to 50 visitors per session , with three sessions per night.

Viewings are currently scheduled until June 2021. Bookings will periodically be released each fortnight in two week blocks.

Meeting Point

The meeting point is the gate at the start of the breakwater located at the end of St Kilda Pier next to the kiosk. A Parks Victoria ranger will meet you at your allotted time. Please allow sufficient time for parking and to walk the 500m pier out to the entry area, as tours will start promptly and late arrivals may be turned away.

The walk to the penguin viewing area is relatively easy however access includes uneven surfaces and two sets of stairs. Please ensure you wear closed footwear and appropriate clothing for all weather conditions. It is often windy and cold at the end of the pier at night. If you have special access requirements or for more information please contact Parks Victoria on stkildapenguins or 13 1963.

The number of penguins on site changes on a nightly basis. Penguins are wild animals and Parks Victoria cannot guarantee penguins will be observed during your session.

Sessions are strictly one-hour in duration and the area must be vacated at the end of your allotted time.

Parks Victoria can direct visitors to leave the area at any time if deemed necessary.

This event may be cancelled at the last minute due to extreme weather conditions. You will be emailed if the event is cancelled.
