A solo dance performance exploring fascia and the continual trans*figuration of queer embodiment

Spin is a solo dance performance situated at the centre of a Practice‑as‑Research PhD in Dance Studies.Through the lens of fascia—the body’s connective tissue network—Spin explores queer and trans orientation as moving somatic experience. The work weaves anatomical sensation with imaginative becoming, generating a performance that is intimate, tactile, and image‑rich.Spin considers anatomy science’s impact on our embodied realities. How do evolving body categories affect the way we live? How might queer and transgender experiences reshape these understandings? This live research performance asks what the world of fascia can teach us about the possibilities of the human body, and how bodies change when categories of sex, gender, and humanity are unsettled from the inside.Developed through ongoing movement research and personal exploration, Spin uses fascia as a portal to spiral, layered, and continually transforming experiences of embodiment. The work unfolds as an investigation of transgendering processes—one that activates regeneration, multiplicity, sensation, and the fleshy vitality of continuous human evolution.Sound: Original Composition by Chien-An Yuan Content Warnings: Adult content relating to sex and gender Access: The venue is wheelchair accessible with accessible toilets. Research Context: This performance forms part of artist’s ongoing doctoral research in Dance Studies, supported by a Cotutelle between Deakin University (Australia) and Coventry University (UK).Spin is presented as a practice‑as‑research work‑in‑progress. About the Artist:Sef (Sarah) Gottlieb (they/them) is a dance artist and researcher working across Australia, the UK, and Europe, originally from Chicago. Their practice explores the intersections between anatomical systems and social orientations, with a current focus on fascia and queer/trans embodiment.Sef is a Visiting Lecturer in Dance at Roehampton University (UK), teaching contemporary and postmodern techniques, choreography, and supervising postgraduate research. Getting to the VenueThis performance will be held in the Dance Studio (B1.48).Before the doors are opened for audience members, you are invited to gather and get your tickets scanned in our foyer area and relax before the show.To get to the box office, if you are driving, we recommend you enter campus from Burwood Highway through Entry 1 (Holland Ave). Once on Holland Avenue, keep following the road down past the oval and around to the right, where you will find Car Park 6, on your right-hand side. If you use the second entrance to Car Park 6, you will remain on the ground floor. This route is shown on the map in red.If you are parking Mon-Fri between 8:30am-4:30pm, you will need to pay for parking through the OPark app (see FAQs for more details on OPark) all other times outside of this parking is FREE. After you have found a park, you can make your way on foot towards our box office area. To find the box office, you will walk alongside the bike racks until you are out the front of Building P. Then you will walk to the left around the building, following the signs with show details on them. These will lead you to the box office.
