SPECULATIVE WORLDS

With Kylie Chan

Let your imagination soar to create original worlds in fantasy and science fiction

Learn about the different types of speculative fiction and where your ideas sit in the vast continuum of imaginary worlds. Get tips on how to build your fantastic world, inhabit it with memorable characters, and take your readers on an adventure they'll never forget.

Learning Outcomes:

You will gain insight into the world-building process and the tools you need to create original and enthralling characters by taking part in the following:

  • Exploring the nature of fantasy and science fiction, its history and diffusion into popular media

  • Discussing cliché’s and over-used tropes in current and historical genre fiction

  • Making your prose engrossing and un-put-down-able

  • Identifying options for setting – place, time, and culture are all yours to experiment with

  • Sharing your view of the future with the group and utilise the discussion for story seeds

  • Outlining the most important parts of plot and character when working in speculative fiction

  • Workshopping tools for creating diverse, interesting, and believable characters in the world you’ve built.

Format:

This is a craft workshop for writers of all levels. More information on program formats and level definitions can be found here.
