Overview

Join us at the Maritime Museum to hear the story of the French expeditions to Australia in search of the Great Southern Land.

During the late 18th and early 19th centuries, there were five major maritime expeditions to Nouvelle-Hollande (Australia) from France. The French played a significant role in charting and documenting the land mass, flora, fauna and human inhabitants of Australia. Learn about the significant role the French played in uncovering the mystery that surrounded the ‘Great Southern Land’.
