In this program, Yannadah Gilly, Aunty Joanne will explore knowledge systems held within the Emu in the Sky constellation, revealing the intricate relationships deeply embedded in science

About the Speaker:

Aunty Joanne Selfe Cadi Nura grew up with stories of Warrawal (the Milky Way), shared by her mother, Elders and Community Knowledge Holders, her knowledge of the nguwing buurah (night sky) reveals the depth of astronomical knowledge systems held by Australia's First Nations people. This event is part of Seniors Festival 2026.

Aunty Joanne Selfe Cadi Nura is a founding member of Warringa Baiya (NSW Aboriginal Women’s Legal Service).

She sat on the Youth Koori Court as an Elder for a number of years. Today, she works on the NSW Judicial Commission’s Ngara Yura program, which educates judicial officers on matters relating to Aboriginal customs, culture, traditions, and society. A holder of sky lore, in her spare time she works with young people in her community sharing the very knowledge systems and skills she learnt from her mother, Elders and community knowledge holders. She is also a master grass weaver.
