Event description

Description

For Catholic and Independent School staff please register via Eventbrite.

For Department of Education staff please register via MY PL:

Children with higher emotional intelligence have been shown to have a greater capacity to soothe themselves when experiencing strong emotions, have more stable friendships, better manage peer conflict and have better concentration. Research consistently shows that parents who support their children learn about emotions in the moment have children with higher emotional intelligence.

Is there a place for emotion coaching in schools?

Waverney will argue yes! School staff will inevitably need to help children with their emotions in the moment and knowing the steps of emotion coaching can be of great help. There is a difference between emotion coaching and behaviour management, however, as teachers and school counsellors, it is beneficial to know how they can work together. Waverney will outline the steps of emotion coaching (a technique that everyone already uses some of the time) and include demonstrations of emotion coaching as well as practical steps and strategies for a busy classroom
Waverney will review how staff in one school district in the UK systematically focused on emotion coaching for one academic year and review the good outcomes that were achieved. By the end of this presentation school, staff will know how to increase their percentage of emotion coaching immediately. Waverney will also provide links to resources that school staff can use to further their knowledge about emotion coaching.

Presenter: Ms Waverney Innes has tertiary qualifications in both primary school teaching (including special education) and psychology. Whilst working locally as a primary school for the NSW Department of Education she completed further studies in Clinical Psychology. Waverney then commenced work as a Clinical Psychologist for Central Coast Local Health District in 2001. Waverney currently holds the position of Senior Clinical Psychologist in Child and Family Health CCLHD and is the Acting Deputy Director of the CCLHD Psychology Department
