Discover the methods for painting water; moving or still, in settings such as the ocean, waterfalls and reflections. Building on an underpainting or coloured paper, we explore techniques that are simple to use and give dependable results. Take this shortcut to making believable water paintings.

We are using soft pastel on our journey of discovery to loosen up, express the fluidity of water and confidently get a painting on its path to success. This is a guided workshop, in manageable size steps, with demonstrations and one on one help.

• Layering pastel for effects.

• Colour mixing with pastel.

• Confidence to continue at home.

About the Tutor: Karol Oakley

Karol Oakley is a highly respected International Pastel Artist known for her vibrant representational paintings. A Master Pastellist for over twenty years Karol has artworks in public and private collections in Australia and overseas. She has been in many exhibitions and is a long-time member of the Pastel Society of Australia, the Pastel Society of Southern California, and the International Association of Pastel Societies.

Regarded as down to earth, approachable, and able to simplify the process of painting, she is a sought-after educator in the pastel medium both online and face to face. Karol is an International judge and tutor travelling, teaching and painting ‘En Plein-air’ as a guest artist at the PANZ Convention in 2018 as well as on painting tours to the Greek Islands and Norfolk Island repeatedly.

This Artist paints from life as much as possible and ‘en plein-air, in pastel, oil and mixed media. Karol is constantly searching out patterns, textures, vibrant colours, and the light extremes of Mother Nature’s presence. The majority of Karol’s work is based on water themes, but this doesn’t stop her from exploring other subjects such as still life, flowers and animal portraits. Karol works on the premise that there is always more to learn and shares her enthusiasm for painting through workshops and demonstrations, when not out exploring new places and painting her response to nature's showcase.

What to Expect from Your Tutor:

“When I teach a workshop I work with artists of all skill levels, so I work with you at your level. Don’t think that’s where my help stops! I work at encouraging and giving skills and confidence to go the next level up or more. There is lots of ‘one on one’ tutoring with even amounts of time spent with each participant. Each participant is listened to and receives supportive guidance. Nobody misses out or is left behind. The best way to learn is to do small steps. That's why I teach in a ‘step by step' method. From exercises to full paintings, everything is demonstrated, explained and questions are encouraged big time.”

What I Expect from You:

“Please be ready to get messy and do things that may be out of your comfort zone. Be willing to go with the flow and trust in the outcome. This workshop is for you to play, explore and learn in a supportive environment. Leave your ‘usual’ at the door, shake off any inhibitions and arrive ready to rock. Be early, be set up, as I start on time. Take time to get settled in, having everything you need out and ready to use before we start. Do ask any questions about the processes we are exploring no matter how weird you think they are. There is probably someone else with the same question who is too shy to ask, so you are doing a favour for many. Make this weekend of learning a fun and energetic high point on your pastel path.”
