Learn about Social Network Analysis in a series of practical sessions led by expert Dr Johan Koskinen, hosted by the Complex Human Data Hub

The Complex Human Data Hub is pleased to be hosting a two-day workshop on Social Network Analysis by our colleague Dr Johan Koskinen, Stockholm University. Johan is an internationally renowned researcher in statistical analysis of social network data, and a highly experienced educator and trainer of network analysis.

The workshop will take place at Melbourne Connect from Thursday 19 March to Friday 20 March. There are 4 x 3 hour sessions and participants can attend individual sessions or participate in all sessions. There is also a Zoom option for participants who are not able to attend in-person. Please use the code 'SNAZOOM' to access reduced zoom pricing (25% off the original price). For any queries, please send them to Jonathan at jonathan.januar@unimelb.edu.au.

Pricing

Student $60 per individual session or $160 for all sessions

Academic $120 per individual session or $320 for all sessions

Industry $180 per individual session or $480 for all sessions

Note

Participants will need to bring their own laptop, with recent versions of R and RStudio installed. Please also install the ‘RSiena’ package before the third session, as this will be used for statistical analysis.

University of Melbourne staff are able to pay using a UoM GL Account String, where applicable. Please contact Jonathan at jonathan.januar@unimelb.edu.au to arrange.

Agenda

-

1. Social influence in cross-sectional network data - Thurs 19 Mar

Dr Johan Koskinen

This session will introduce approaches for explaining individual-level outcomes using networks, with an emphasis on inferring social influence with cross-sectional data. We will explore regression models with network data but have a particular focus on and be given hands-on experience of estimating Auto-logistic Actor Attribute Models (ALAAM) using Bayesian inference. We will cover practical aspects of implementing the analysis, including examples of reading in and formatting the data, conducting the analysis, and interpreting the results. This session will include a tea and coffee station.

-

2. Advanced topics in ALAAMs - Thurs 19 Mar

Dr Johan Koskinen

This session will describe recent theoretical developments of the ALAAM and demonstrate its implementation in R. We will cover model selection, missing data and multivariate extensions for Bayesian Inference for ALAAM in R. This session will include a tea and coffee station.

-

3. Modelling social influence with panel network data - Fri 20 Mar

Dr Johan Koskinen

This session introduces stochastic actor-oriented models (SAOMs) for repeated observations on networks in time. We will be given hands-on experience of using the R package RSiena, covering of the various model specifications detailed in the literature. We will also demonstrate and justify why SAOMs are capable of disentangling social influence and social selection. This session will include a tea and coffee station.
