Join us for “Smart Cities Indonesia” a lecture from the leader of Indonesia’s largest province and prominent architect, West Java Governor HE Ridwan Kamil.
Governor Ridwan is a trained architect and received his Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). After receiving his Master’s degree in Urban Planning from the University of California at Berkeley in 2001, he worked in New York, San Francisco, and Hong Kong before returning to Indonesia where he taught at ITB.
In 2004, he established architecture and design firm Urbane, and has been involved in many high-profile international architectural works in various countries, including the Aceh Tsunami Museum in Banda Aceh in Indonesia and Marina Bay Waterfront Master Plan in Singapore.
He won the British Council’s Young Creative Entrepreneur Award in 2006 and was named Architect of the Year by Elle Décor Magazine in 2009.
He is committed to grassroots urban design that empowers urban poor population. He has been a pioneer in the Indonesia Berkebun movement, to build gardens and promote urban farming in cities across Indonesia. He has also spearheaded many urban transformation initiatives, such as the Bandung Creative City Forum (BCCF), Bandung Citizen Journal, and One Village One Playground Concept.
Governor Ridwan is the 15th elected Governor of West Java Province, the most populous province of Indonesia. He was previously Mayor of the City of Bandung, 2013-2018.
