The development of this body of law has a long history in the world’s ancient legal and cultural traditions. 2024 marks the 160th anniversary of the world’s first multilateral treaty regulating the conduct of war - the 1864 Geneva Convention – and the multilateral community has gathered together regularly since to further develop and extend the law. A key feature of this rich history is the difference individuals have made through their own contributions to the development and to the implementation of the Law.

<h3>Sir Kenneth Keith</h3>Sir Kenneth Keith ONZ KBE KC PC has long been involved in the development, implementation and enforcement of the Law of War. After graduating from Auckland, Victoria University Wellington and Harvard Law Schools in the early 1960s, Sir Kenneth pursued successful careers in academia at Victoria University Wellington as well as with the NZ Foreign Ministry including stints with the UN Secretariat in New York and as head of the NZ Delegation in the 1970s for the negotiation of the 2 Additional Protocols to the Geneva Conventions of 1949.Sir Kenneth commenced a most distinguished judicial career in 1996 when he was appointed to the NZ High Court and the NZ Court of Appeal. He was subsequently appointed to the Privy Council and then to the Supreme Court of NZ. Sir Kenneth was the first New Zealander to be elected judge of the International Court of Justice, the UN’s principal judicial organ. He served a 9 year term on the bench of the ICJ in The Hague from 2006-2015. <h3>The Sir Elliott Lewis Memorial Lecture</h3>The Sir Elliott Lewis Memorial Lecture is held to perpetuate the memory of Sir Neil Elliott Lewis and to encourage original work in the fields of law, legal history, public administration and economics.Sir Neil Elliott Lewis KCMG (27 October 1858 – 22 September 1935) was Premier of Tasmania on three occasions. He was also a member of the first Australian federal ministry, led by Edmund Barton.From 1903-1909 Neil Elliott Lewis was vice-chancellor of the University of Tasmania and chancellor in 1924–1933. By the time of his death in 1935 he was the last Dominion or self-governing colonial head of government of the Victorian era.
