Shanasheel: ancient musical traditions from the Arab world and Middle East
Discover the depth and beauty of Arabic and Middle Eastern instrumental music with Shanasheel.
Discover the depth and beauty of Arabic and Middle Eastern instrumental music with Shanasheel, an ensemble dedicated to bringing ancient melodic traditions into vivid contemporary life.
Led by Iraqi-born violinist and joza (Iraqi kamancheh) player Nawres Alfreh, Shanasheel explores the rich worlds of maqam, regional folk repertoires, and classical forms through performances that are at once intimate, expansive, and deeply expressive. Formed after Alfreh’s relocation to Australia, the group unites accomplished musicians who have long collaborated across a range of projects and traditions.
Focusing exclusively on instrumental music, Shanasheel crafts immersive journeys built on melodic storytelling, nuanced improvisation, and dynamic rhythmic conversation. Their repertoire moves fluidly between classical works, village songs, and newly arranged pieces - honouring source traditions while opening space for fresh perspectives and contemporary expression.
From meditative passages to spirited, rhythm-driven exchanges, Shanasheel’s performances invite listeners into a living musical language shaped by centuries of cultural exchange across the Middle East.
With members having appeared at major events including WOMAD, Dark Mofo, and the Woodford Folk Festival, Shanasheel offers a rare opportunity to experience these traditions in a focused, powerful, and deeply human instrumental setting - whether you come with cultural connections, musical curiosity, or a simple desire to be transported by sound.
Presented by World Within Worlds, with support from the City Of Sydney.
