ShakingZen is a natural healing process that can help meet life’s challenges with ease and grace.

It is a unique combination of TRE (Tension and Trauma Releasing Exercises) and Zen/mindfulness meditation. The practice involves:

  • Rewiring the brain to reduce overthinking and to live more in the present moment – rather than lost in the past and the future. 
  • Reconnecting with the emotions without feeling overwhelmed by them and without avoiding them – feeling them fully to live life more whole. 
  • Releasing the tension and trauma from the body by literally shaking it free with TRE to feel safe, calm and balanced. 

ShakingZen is designed to be used as an ongoing, open ended, DIY home practice that can be used to release stress and tension anywhere, any time.

Upon completion of the program attendees are also welcome to join the monthly ShakingZen workshop to fine-tune their practice, have questions answered and benefit from the support of the ShakingZen community.

Group practice is a great way to help refresh, maintain and deepen ShakingZen practice.

The ShakingZen course will commence Saturday, 07 October, 2017.



  • Four two-hour Saturday workshops from 2-4pm;
  • Each Saturday session will provide instruction on the theory and practice of Shaking/Zen (TRE – Tension and Trauma Release Exercises and Zen/mindfulness);
  • A generous amount of time is available in each session for questions and discussion.

  • 21 OCTOBER 2017 (Saturday, 2–4PM)
  • 28 OCTOBER 2017 (Saturday, 2–4PM)



  • Wear loose clothing;
  • A cushion for rest time.

Steve Brown

Steve Brown has been a counsellor/psychotherapist and Mindfulness teacher for over 25 years. He has a longstanding meditation practice in the Zen tradition and in the 1980's spent time in Asia practicing and studying Buddhist meditation in monasteries and ashrams throughout Thailand, Nepal and India.

Recently he has trained in TRE (Tension and Trauma Release Exercises), a non-talk, self-help process that releases deeply held tension and trauma from the body. TRE can be a useful adjunct in the treatment of emotional difficulties including stress, anxiety, depression, and trauma/PTSD. 

“I’m keen to bring TRE to those groups of people who are marginalised in our community, and to emergency service workers, and to those suffering from Developmental/Complex Trauma – people who have experienced longstanding abuse and neglect in early childhood,” he explains.

Steve believes TRE works in harmony with Mindfulness, “I have recently begun teaching ShakingZen – a unique combination of TRE and Zen/mindfulness meditation. These two practices are the perfect complement to each other.”
