"Shadowless Being" with Professor Michael Taussig (in-person Melbourne event only)
About this event
Does thought have a shape? Consider a charm used to thwart sorcery, but first the apotropaic properties of shadowlessness on the part of killers.
Born in Sydney where he studied medicine and practised briefly in Sydney and London, Michael Taussig has taught in Performance Studies in NYU and Anthropology at Columbia, NYC from where he just retired. His fieldwork lies mainly in (1) writing and (2) in the country of Colombia. His work spans real magical realism admixed with Nietzsche and Marx and a never-ending affair with magic and sorcery. His books are many and almost all translated into Spanish in Colombia, including The Devil and Commodity Fetishism; Shamanism, Colonialism, and the Wild Man, Mimesis and Alterity; My Cocaine Museum; Law in a Lawless Land; and most recent Palma Africana. At present he is writing on corpse magic.
