Event description

Description

The ACT Branch of AARES has invited Dr Tim Capon to speak about Economic resilience from the perspective of a decision-maker.

The presentation will be followed by questions and informal discussions in the relaxed social setting of the Fellows Bar. Drinks and finger food will be provided.

Abstract: In this research we apply new developments in the application of real options analysis to more clearly define and measure the concept of economic resilience from the perspective of a decision-maker. As pointed out in the literature, resilience in social and economic systems differs from ecological resilience because people are conscious of the future in a way that ecosystems are not. We demonstrate how to measure economic resilience, how to value economic resilience, and how this approach is relevant to a broad range of economic contexts and applications..

About the speaker: Dr Tim Capon is an economist with CSIRO. His research draws on economic theories of decision-making under risk and uncertainty to understand the factors that shape decisions and market outcomes. He has worked on applications including the design of markets for greenhouse gas emissions and soil carbon sequestration, the design of market-based instruments for natural resource management, climate change adaptation decision-making, and biosecurity decision support.
