Description

Translating and Interpreting Program - Global, Urban and Social Studies - RMIT University.

Lecture: Security and Translation

Free PD event - limited places

There is a current growing field of practice where Translating and Interpreting professionals are engaged in transcribing and translating a variety of texts including telephone conversations, text messages or texts from social media. This specialist area of work is complex and requires dexterity and a particular set of skills. It demands an understanding of characteristics of spoken discourse and in some cases to speak a particular dialect, in order to decipher recordings. Therefore, an interpreter is usually engaged, however to translate such material into English actually requires translation competency.

RMIT's Translating and Interpreting Program is pleased to have Mr Steve Elkanovich, Manager of Legal Services, from the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC). Steve will be giving a talk on this topic that will help students, practitioners and trainers in the Translating and Interpreting field, prepare for this type of work, and will provide an understanding of what professionals working in these settings expect from T&I practitioners. Our guest speaker will also kindly attend to Q&A.

*Please arrive on time for registration.

* Please bring your printed ticket to access the venue and for certificate of attendance purposes.
