#SciPubKelp: a celebration of Tasmania’s giant seaweed
About this event
Join us for an exploration and celebration of kelp! Tasmania’s wild seas are home to several species of kelp: including giant kelp, the largest seaweed in the world (did you know it can grow to 40 m tall, and grow up to 50 cm a day? ).
In recent years, however, Tasmania's giant kelp forests have come under threat from factors such as climate change. In response, UTAS scientists have been undertaking some fascinating, and much needed research.
Come and hear a fantastic panel speak about ground-breaking efforts to restore giant kelp beds off Tasmania’s coasts, how we can track kelp from space, as well as fascinating questions about whether we can farm kelp, and how sea urchins might affect kelp populations in the future.
It will be a cracker!
Panellists:
Professor Craig Johnson (UTAS)
Dr Cayne Layton (UTAS)
Claire Butler (UTAS)
