Event description
Come learn about science, nature, and biodiversity at this FREE family-friendly event at Tolosa Park.

About this event

After the success of our 2019 event and the COVID-cancellation of our 2020 event, Science in the Park will be back on the Sunday 24th October 2021!

As in our 2019 , this event will take place near the Music Bowl in Tolosa Park from 2:00pm-5:00pm. Activities will include guided nature and geology hikes, hands-on science activities, Aboriginal workshops, and more! A complete schedule will be emailed to registered attendees closer to the event. Some activities will require bookings due to capacity restrictions. The event is FREE, however, if you have capacity, we request that you donate $5 per adult or $10 per family towards our running costs. If you donate $5 you will get a free raffle ticket when you arrive, if you donate $10, you will get 3 tickets upon arrival. Additional raffle tickets are available at the event and we will have lots of great prizes to give away.

This year’s SciPARK will also include a BioBlitz; a citizen-science biodiversity measuring event. For the BioBlitz activity, guides will take participants on walks around the park, searching for and identifying insects, birds, plants, and other diverse forms of life (biodiversity). BioBlitz observations will be logged into the iNaturalist app, which can also help ID species. We will have microscopes for examining specimens up close and guide books to help participants learn more about the biodiversity they encounter. Other activities will include ‘make your own beeswax wrap’, ‘chemistry sunprints’, geocaching, a predator table and a worm show.

This event is a great opportunity to share the fun SciPub style with the family! So come and learn about science and nature, meet some great people, and play in the park.

Activities will be designed for children between approximately 5 - 15 years old. Parents must accompany children at this event. COVID-safe practices must be adhered to at all times.

SciPark will be operating as a Covid-safe event, following health advice and restrictions set by the Department of Health and the State Government. Please make yourself aware of the most up to date restrictions and advice related to Tasmania, and events within Tasmania checking current restrictions here.
