Science and Engineering Challenge 2026 - Deakin Geelong Campus

Get involved in the 2026 Science and Engineering Challenge!
The Science and Engineering Challenge is a nationwide STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) program founded by the University of Newcastle and run in partnership with Rotary Clubs and Deakin University. The program is designed to encourage students to select STEM subjects in their VCE years.
Teams of year 9 & 10 students students participate in an exhilarating day competing against other schools in fun and engaging hands-on activities including such as:
- designing an earthquake-proof tower
- building a bridge
- providing electricity to a city
- and mastering the art of indigenous fish traps.
Up to eight schools compete on a single Challenge Day, with each school registering one team of 16 to 32 students. Schools attend for that day only. Points are awarded based on performance throughout the day, and the school with the highest total score at the conclusion of the event is declared the winner.
Winning schools may progress to a state final, and eight state champions from around Australia are invited to compete in a one-day national final each year.
Venue: Deakin Melbourne Burwood Campus
Dates: 23 or 24 June 2026
Team Size: Minimum 16 and maximum 32 students per secondary school
Capacity: Maximum of 8 schools per day
Year Levels: Years 9 and 10
