Event description

The Experiencing Marine Sanctuaries (EMS) School Education Program is inviting five schools (two classes from each - years 4 to 10) to become involved in our program. Program would normally cost school $2,700 but first five schools chosen will complete program for free thanks to funding support from Natural Resources, Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges and the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources. The EMS program empowers schools and communities by providing hands-on experience in the ocean. The full EMS program involves investigating marine biodiversity within local marine environments before venturing to a fully-protected marine reserve. After this experience (and/or research), students are able to compare unprotected and protected areas and are encouraged to put their knowledge into action within the community.

The EMS program concept:

  • Introduction to marine biodiversity
  • Investigation of local marine area
  • Marine Park/Sanctuary Zone experience
  • Comparison between local area and fully protected area
  • Action for the marine environment

EMS coordinators offer guidance, direction and coordination of classroom exercises and field trips to the ocean. We also provide snorkel equipment, instruction, resources and snorkel risk management.

The school is required to cover the cost of transport and any other associated expenses with regard to field trips, such as food or overnight accommodation if necessary. Gear hire is provided by EMS free. We rely on the school’s ability to provide in-water adult/parent ‘supervisors’ to ensure adequate ratio of 1:2 for year 8 and below.

All EMS snorkelling, including ‘once off’ snorkel experiences are run in accordance with the EMS Safety & Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's for snorkelling).

Supported and funded by SA Govt. AMLR NRM Board and DEWNR Marine Parks.
