Susannah Fullerton: Scene of the Crime series - Lecture 1

Setting is hugely important to a crime writer. It sets the mood, it reveals character, it influences the plot, it can have a symbolic importance, and it helps establish credibility by rooting awful and sometimes bizarre events in the soil of a recognised place. Some authors manage to evoke a setting so well that literary tourists arrive in great numbers to do guided walks around the places associated with fictional characters.

Although a graduate of Cambridge University, Colin Dexter worked for the University of Oxford from 1966 to 1988. His first Inspector Morse novel, Last Bus to Woodstock, was published in 1975 and he continued writing the series until 1999. The books were turned into hugely successful TV adaptations (in which Dexter himself usually made cameo appearances), and Morse tours of Oxford are immensely popular. Join this crossword-solving, opera-loving, literature-aware detective as he drinks English ales in the Oxford pubs, strolls through the colleges in search of answers, and soaks up the atmosphere in the City of Dreaming Spires.
