Event description
Four emerging artists share their works in progress in a night of storytelling, intimacy and enchantment

About this Event

Four emerging artists share their works in progress in a night of storytelling, intimacy and enchantment. Be part of their process and be transported to their worlds at this sahra (evening gathering). Sahra Salon will be a night of performances, screenings, sound scapes and conversations. We invite you to come and share our intimate space of creativity and indulgence.

Hajer

Hajer is an emerging writer and performer. From short stories to essays to plays, her work flirts with themes of womanhood, particularly within Arab and Semitic diaspora identity formation. She is currently interrogating and experimenting with feminine and masculine archetypal traditions, within folklore, fairy-tale and fable-style storytelling.

Abu Bakri Mahmoud

Abu Bakri Mahmoud describes himself as a multimedia content creator. He works as a photographer and video producer for the ABC, having been published on ABC LIFE, THE MIX, and AUSTRALIAN STORY. At the core of his work are stories of people, art and culture.

Samia Sayed

Samia Sayed is a Sydney-based Queer, Arab, artist and writer. Her work explores the experience of being raised in Australia amongst first-generation families, of traveling to homelands, of the tensions between these worlds, and of the loss and violence that she has experienced in these contexts. Shaped by this experience, Samia's work explores the fragility of the Arabic language, love and violence through food, eroticism, politics, culture, religion and sadness - establishing these connections through her personal relationships.

Shareeka Helaludin

Shareeka Helaluddin is a multidisciplinary artist and facilitator who uses writing and soundscapes to explore queerness, diaspora, futures, and questions of how to resist - and heal from - structures of oppression. Her work is a process of navigating what it is to be and feel liminality, in between cultures. She finds solace and intrigue in drone and dissonance, and often interweaves seemingly disparate sounds and ideas in an attempt to deconstruct form and expectation, carving out space for ambivalence.

This is a free event. Limited capacity, bookings essential.

Food and drinks will be provided.

The event is sponsored by Western Sydney University and Parramatta Artists' Studios with the support of Create NSW and The Crown / Packer Foundation.

Sahra Salon is part of the Studio Stories program, a series of literary events at Parramatta Artists' Studios which features Western Sydney Writers telling stories of their lives and their places.
