This course is delivered in six modules over a period of three weeks. Commences on Tuesday 21 May and concludes on Thursday 6 June 2024.

The Safe System Audit combines both the Safe System Assessment framework and the identification of road safety concerns (using the traditional road safety audit procedures), into a single Safe System audit for use throughout the project development lifecycle. This program covers the 2022 Austroads Guide to Road Safety Part 6: Road Safety Audit and the new Aotearoa Safe System audit guidelines. This course is relevant to individuals who wish to become a Safe System Auditor, those required to manage the Safe System Audit process or current Road Safety Auditors that wish to undertake a refresher course.

SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION

In order to successfully complete this program and gain your certificate to become a Safe System Auditor, you must:

  • Attend a minimum of 5 out of 6 live webinars (all webinars are recorded and available to review) and view any not attended.
  • Satisfactory completion of all set tasks - including quizzes, exercises/assignments, audit site visit & audit report.
  • Achieve an average 80% pass mark on all quizzes (up to three attempts with one-on-one coaching available if required)

TRAINER

Kenn Beer (BEng (Hons), MPIA RPEng, RPEQ, RPEV)

Kenn is the Principal Engineer of Safe System Solutions Pty Ltd, a specialist road safety engineering consultancy working across Australia and New Zealand.

Before founding Safe System Solutions Pty Ltd in 2013, Kenn worked for VicRoads in a variety of roles including Manager Planning, Manager Program Development and Team Leader Road Safety Engineering. During his career Kenn has undertaken over 400 Road Safety Audits on some of Australia’s most high profile and complex infrastructure projects.

Kenn has been the lead trainer for official Road Safety Auditor courses in Victoria, South Australia, Queensland, New Zealand, Northern Territory and Tasmania. Austroads appointed Kenn as the specialist technical advisor for SAG2060 and SAG6221 – updating the Guide to Road Safety Part 6: Road Safety Audit.

He is one of Australia’s most active Safe System practitioners having undertaken over 150 major Safe System Assessments and being involved in numerous Austroads Safe System projects including SAG2090 Best Practice in Road Safety Infrastructure Program Development, SS2035 Safe System Infrastructure on Mixed Use Arterials and SSP6038 Key Interventions to Reduce Road Trauma.

Kenn is a registered road safety engineer, Senior Road Safety Auditor, and transport planner with further qualifications in training and assessment.

GUEST PRESENTERS

Fergus Tate (BEng, MSc, PhD Transport)

Fergus Tate is widely acknowledged to be a leading expert in road safety in New Zealand, having spent over seven years with the NZ Transport Agency where he was the Lead Safety Advisor for Roads and Roadsides and previously the National Manager Traffic and Safety.

He is currently the Technical Director Transport with WSP. His has applied his expertise to some of the most innovative road safety projects in New Zealand, such as the introduction of the New Zealand Road Assessment Programmes KiwiRAP and road Infrastructure Risk Rating (IRR), as well as Rural Intersection Active Warning Systems (RIAWS) and out of context curves.

Sam Pasley (MInstD, CPEng, CMEngNZ)

Sam is a Chartered Professional Road Safety Engineer in Safe System Solutions’ New Zealand office. Sam has over 15 years’ experience in road safety and transport engineering and has previously led a team of over 25 road safety professionals. Sam was part of the team that won the 2022 National Award for Road Safety and currently works with numerous road controlling authorities to deliver safe system outcomes.
