Description

Rockdale Wetlands Tour

When: Friday 23rd June, 10:00 am - 1:00 am
Where: Bayside Council car park, York St, Rockdale.
Cost: Free

Rockdale may seem like a sleepy suburb on the outskirts of inner Sydney, but it has a fascinating local history, including being home to one of Australia's most famous Aboriginal resistance fighters Pemulway. There are also several beautiful wetland and bushland remnants that are alive with wildlife. Local environmentalist and historian Dr Arthur White will lead this tour and visit wetland and historic sites including;

  • Eve St Wetland, home of the endangered Green and Golden Bell frog and heritage listed SWOOS,
  • Landing Lights Wetland important to various migrating and local birds,
  • Patmore Swamp hiding place of indigenous freedom fighter Pemulwuy
  • Hawthorne Street Natural Area, listed by the State Government as an Endangered Ecological Community.

Please bring water, a hat and sunscreen. The tour includes an approximately 500 metre walk through the Hawthorne St Natural Area so please wear appropriate walking shoes. The tour is not suitable for children under 8.

In the event of rain on the day, please check you email for an update or call 9562 1663 to see if we are still going ahead.

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?
The bus will be leaving from the York St car park behind Council Chambers at 10:00am sharp and returning there at 1:00 pm. The car park has free three hour parking. Alternatively, our meeting place is an approximately 10 minute walk from Rockdale Station or a two minute walk from bus tops on the Princes Highway and Bryant St Rockdale.
