Abstract

This presentation will provide an overview of the types of emissions produced by internal combustion engines used in marine applications and some of the key drivers behind current and future emission limits set by the IMO and local regulators. In particular we will introduce some recent developments in IMO regulations pertaining to existing vessels. We will look at a case study of an emerging marine fuel and its relative merits in meeting future emissions requirements. Finally, we briefly touch on some of the existing technologies employed by engine manufacturers to reduce or ‘scrub’ emissions and current areas of development.
