Event description

Description

Due to the popularity of the concert we have opened a second sitting.

Please join us for an intimate shakuhachi concert with Riley Lee.

Riley Lee is a world famous composer and performer of the shakuhachi, and the first non-Japanese person to earn the title Grand Master. His performances and teaching skills are sought after world-wide.

The shakuhachi is an end blown bamboo flute used for meditative spiritual practice by Zen monks in Japan. In the shakuhachi tradition a collection of musical pieces are passed down from teacher to student, called honkyoku (meaning “original pieces”).

This concert is a special commemoration for the late Robert Aitken Roshi. Inspirational Zen master, founder of an international Zen community, and the founding teacher of the Sydney Zen Centre. This year would mark his 100th birthday.

To commemorate his life, Riley Lee will weave traditional Zen honkyoku music with short stories about Robert Aitken Roshi, spoken by those who knew him personally. This creative format is a first of its kind and will weave Zen wisdom with expressive shakuhachi music.

The Old Darlington School will provide a beautiful backdrop and acoustics for an intimate concert of no more than 50 seats: http://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/heritageapp/ViewHeritageItemDetails.aspx?ID=4726033
