Ride Ready: Your Path to Safe Motorcycle Riding

Learning to ride a motorcycle is an exciting milestone, and we want to help you start your journey safely and confidently. While South Australian roads have become safer over the past decade, motorcycle riders are still at higher risk of being seriously injured.

Whether you're applying for your motorcycle learner’s permit, have just received it, or you're an experienced rider, this session will help build your skills, confidence and road awareness.

Why this session matters

In 2025, South Australia recorded:

  • 8 rider fatalities
  • 172 seriously injured riders and 4 injured pillion passengers
  • 530 casualty crashes involving motorcyclists, including 19 pillion passengers

These numbers represent real people and real families affected by road trauma. Our goal is to equip new riders with the knowledge and skills to make safer choices on the road.

What to expect

Ride Ready: Your Path to Safe Motorcycle Riding is delivered by experienced SA Police officers, including a motorcycle traffic officer from SAPOL’s State Traffic Enforcement Unit. Held at the Road Safety Centre, this session will help you understand how to get your licence and what to expect along the way.

You’ll also hear the powerful story of Nathan Anderson, a young rider who tragically lost his life in 2024 after just four weeks on his licence. Nathan’s motorcycle is displayed at the Road Safety Centre as a reminder of why safe riding matters for every rider, no matter their experience.

All participants are encouraged to explore our engaging Road Safety Interactive Zone, featuring:

  • Motorcycle simulator
  • Driving simulators
  • Hands‑on safety activities

A great way to practise real‑world scenarios in a safe, controlled environment.

What the session covers

We’ll walk you through:

  • how to apply for your motorcycle licence
  • learner’s permit conditions and motorcycle licence classes
  • the Fatal Five causes of road trauma
  • the Graduated Licensing Scheme
  • choosing the right protective gear
  • basic motorcycle maintenance
  • lane filtering rules, risks & consequences
  • understanding choices, risks & consequences
  • using the Personal Property Securities Register
