RENT
Jonathan Larson's RENT rocked the foundations of Broadway 20 years ago and musical theatre changed forever. Today RENT remains iconic, enduring and as urgent as when it triumphantly surfaced in 1996.
Puccini’s seminal opera La Boheme is re-imagined by Larson and his collaborators at a critical junction in the story of New York. In the late eighties, the face of New York would radically alter. By 1996, when RENT opened on Broadway, the HIV epidemic had destroyed a generation, the East Village was gentrified, and the homeless had been moved on. RENT immortalises this unique moment of recent history.
In 2017 Fed Uni's Graduating Music Theatre Company proudly take on this pop cultural phenomenon, in a special season at the Athenaeum 2, the perfect venue to stage a new production of RENT.
