Remote Control

The Flying Nun is a showcase of the outcomes from Performing Arts residencies with Brand X at the East Sydney Community and Arts Centre. By its very nature, we celebrate the fringe, alternative and contemporary counter-culture, contributing multi-disciplinary creative risk-taking to the East Sydney Creative Precinct. Come and be the first audience to witness new work fresh out of the rehearsal room and by doing so, support Independent Artists with income and feedback to propel the work on to stages across Sydney.

The Flying Nun

Hot on the heels of his last full-length solo (Threshold:NRC) for PACT theatre’s double bill program Generations in June 2018, award-winning dancer, choreographer, researcher, diver and marine environmental advocate, Dean Walsh, creates a new solo work for our Flying Nun season in the second half of 2018 at ESCAC.   In this new work, Remote Control, Dean will choreographically investigate and showcase a series of realigned and reimagined ‘selves’ as a mature queer artist who was diagnosed as living with autism spectrum condition (ASC – Asperger’s Syndrome) and ADHD. Dean has been an artist of national prominence for over two decades and many of his past works, solo and group, have unapologetically wrestled subject matter close to home and close-to-the-bone and always with humour, irony, wit and emotionally confronting components in equal measure.   Remote Control is, in part, a history lesson in queer Sydney performance and dance culture, a GPS through psychological and emotional chaos brought about through surviving an extremely violent and homophobic upbringing and now being able to read the coordinates more clearly post NeuroQueer diagnosis. It is also a work of unbridled honesty, beauty and environmental hope.
