Over the past two decades, Ms Anton has gravitated to roles that sit at the intersection between technology and policy. Starting from the early days of broadband policy and programs, to cybersecurity and championing internal transformation through smart use of technology. A career highlight includes establishing the Government’s Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT). She has a breadth of public sector experience where she has held senior management positions across the Industry, Education and the Attorney-General’s Portfolios.

Ms Anton holds a Bachelor of Science with Honours, Master of Management both from the Australian National University (ANU). She has also completed the Company Directors Course through the Australian Institute of Company Directors and is a member of the Advisory Board for the ANU’s recently established Cyber Institute.

Abstract: a Time to Grow

Deborah was appointed as the interim National Data Commissioner in August 2018. In this role she is responsible for the development of a new Data Sharing and Release Framework to simplify and improve data sharing across the Australian Public Service.

The framework will include new legislation to allow the commissioner to strengthen the integrity, management and use of public sector data. Under the commissioner’s guidance, the Office of the Data Commissioner will strive to improve the management and quality of public sector data to enable Australia to be a world-leader in the use and reuse of public data sharing.

In this presentation Ms Anton will reflect on her introduction to DAMA, why data reforms are critical to modernising the Australian Public Service and the importance of progressing reforms in line with community expectations.
