Overview

The Teacher Was an Octopus

My Octopus Teacher

They say the sea keeps its secrets close, whispering them only to those foolish or brave enough to listen. In the cold, kelp-tangled waters of False Bay, a man named Craig Foster went looking for nothing more than silence. What he found was a teacher.

She was a creature of otherworldly intelligence, a pulse of life in a forest of green gold. For a year, he visited her world - a world of shocking violence and tender grace, where a pyjama shark’s bite is a fact of life, and the slow regrowth of a limb is a lesson in patience. She showed him how to survive, how to create and in the end, how to let go.

This is a story of a friendship that crossed the boundary between species, a love song to the wild that will leave you with the salt of the ocean on your skin and an ache of wonder in your chest.
