Description

REDEFINING HOW WE MEASURE OUR WORLD

How we define mass, distance, time, energy and more is going to change in May 2019.

Join us at the Shine Dome to hear more about the once-in-a-lifetime revision to the international measurement system.

Dr Barry Inglis is the first Australian to be elected President of the International Committee for Weights and Measures (the peak position in international measurement science) and his presentation will answer the following questions:

  • How was the International System of Units (SI, the 'metric system') created?
  • How does the SI help industry, the community, science and emerging technologies?
  • What is the role of national metrology institutes such as Australia’s NMI?
  • What are the proposed changes, and how will they impact us?

Following the presentation by Dr Inglis, a panel discussion and audience Q&A will be facilitated. The panellists will include;

Dr Barry Inglis - President, International Committee for Weights and Measures

Dr Fred Watson - Astronomer-at-large, Department of Industry, Innovation and Science

Dr Bruce Warrington - CEO (A/g) and Chief Metrologist, NMI

Dr Lindsey Mackay - GM, Chemical and Biological Metrology, NMI
