About this event

Whether you bring along your own project or use some of the community supplies, you can sit back and relax or participate in a mini induction for the sewing machines or overlockers so you can use them. You can check out the library makerspace page to see what other inductions, classes and groups are available at:

https://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/things-to-see-and-do/council-venues-and-precincts/libraries/facilities-services/carindale-library-makerspace

This group will be run on the 3rd Thursday of each month, so pencil it into your calendar for the rest of the year

Some of the activities you can participate in are making custom t-shirts and patches, learn to sew a tote bag, learn to use sewing patterns, make your own stickers or paper crafts using the scan and cut, or just do some colouring in with good company. Please feel free to bring along your own t-shirt, fabrics, papers and design ideas. To make t-shirts or stickers, you can bring printed or hand drawn designs (used bold clean lines in pen and remember you are trying to make only solid blocks of black on white to be cut out of tshirt vinyl) or bring your design as an SVG on a usb stick.

We aim for this to be a lowkey, relaxed environment. You do not have to attend the entire time or stress about being right on time, but we'd appreciate if you let us know roughly when you expect to be there when booking your ticket. You do not have to directly participate in the arranged activities, and we strive to be as inclusive as possible, so please also let us know if you have any special requirements such as triggers, mental or physical health conditions that you wish to disclose, and allergies or sensitivities that we might be able to control for (food allergies, contact allergies, scents, auditory or visual stimuli sensitivities, etc.). The library is physically accessible with disabled parking within the undercover shopping centre carpark right outside one of the library entrances (you may wish to contact the library for more details). There is also a food court, grocery store and Kmart just up the elevators, and a Spotlight down the other end of the shopping centre if you need any supplies, as well as a community cupboard and rainbow craft supplies available for free.

Anyone who is kind, accepting and hospitable is welcome. We only ask that you respect all identities, gender expressions and pronouns, including those outside the binary. Be mindful of discussion topics that may be triggering or stressful to others, as people in our community are often vulnerable. Name tags are provided and it's encouraged to wear one with your preferred name and pronouns (whether or not you think it's necessary) to help those who have language processing difficulties and to make the space inclusive of those whose pronouns can not be assumed. Keep in mind we may have allies in attendance and people from age 15 and upwards are welcome, so the demographic may be varied.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Frequently asked questions

Is there parking?

Yes, you can use the shopping centre car park- 3 hours free, or find a street park further away for unlimited free parking. The closest shopping centre parking is to enter the basement carpark off the roundabout intersection of Millenium Bvd & Bedivere St, then turn left after the entrance gates.

Can I bring a friend or support worker?

Of course, just fill out a ticket for them as well as yourself. The ticketing is just to avoid overcrowding the room, so each person should get a ticket, whether or not they are crafting

Are there COVID precautions in place?

We follow the precautions as implemented by the library, such as limiting the number of people in the room & providing hand sanitizer. We do not enforce wearing masks at this time, however, if you have special circumstances or concerns, please email us and we can discuss if we can accomadate you.

I've been/am feeling sick with cold/flu symptoms. Can I still come?

No, please do not attend if you are feeling sick with an illness that could be contagious. We understand that some symptoms that look like a cold or flu might be from another illness or disability. If the organiser is concerned, they will ask about it privately if you have not otherwise told them

I can't find the Library. Where is it?!

The library is located on level B1, underneath the smaller food court at the north side of the centre (near Coles). The lift and stairs are in a glass atrium with a big suspended heart. Alternatively, there are entrance doors directly to the library from the car park or off Millenium Bvd
