Description

Ilaria Crociani and Mirko Guerrini

The Italian Cultural Institute is pleased to introduce the Radiosuccessi duo: Ilaria Crociani(vocals) and Mirko Guerrini (piano and sax), who will perform a tribute to Luigi Tenco on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of his tragic and unexpected death on 27 January 1967. The concert will present a jazz reinterpretation of Luigi Tenco's songs.

Italian singer-songwriter Luigi Tenco has been a member of the so-called “scuola genevose”, a group of artists including Fabrizio De André, Bruno Lauzi, Gino Paoli and Umberto Bindi, who have deeply renovated Italian pop music. His dramatic and unexpected death, on the 27th January 1967, deeply shocked his fans and left as a legacy a sublime, often ironic and bitter poetry, which describes his lucid and frank vision of life, love, Italian politics and society.

Originally from Florence and now based in Melbourne, Italian singer and lyricist Ilaria Crociani studied piano at the Conservatorio di Musica L. Cherubini in Florence, and afterwards alto sax. She discovered her passion for jazz singing while playing the saxophone in the Concert Band of Fiesole and in the Ray-Bepi Big Band of Florence. While studying jazz and vocals at the renowned Siena Jazz academy, she immediately hit the stage, performing at all the major jazz venues around Tuscany. She soon became the most sought-after big band singer, working since the '90s with ensembles such as the Florentine Ray-Bepi Big Band, the 50Zero28 Big Band in Tavarnelle and the Danger Big Band in Saturnia. With the Millenium Bugs' Orchestra she has performed in various jazz festivals such as Umbria Jazz Festival, the Brisighella Jazz Festival and the Tarragona Jazz Festival in Spain, and has recorded two CDs. Some highlights after her recent relocation to Australia include her performances at the 2015 Brunswick Festival and at the 2015 Piers Festival. During her shows Ilaria proposes a jazz version of famous Italian pop songs from the '30s to the 60's, i.e. the golden age of the Italian swing.

Mirko Guerrini was born in Florence in 1973. He studied piano, saxophone, composition and jazz at the L. Cherubini Conservatorium in Florence, where he obtained a Master degree in classical saxophone, a Master degree in jazz and a degree in composition. He is now an eclectic multi-instrumentalist, composer and orchestra conductor, he has 15 CDs published to his credit as a solo sax player and leader of jazz ensembles and more than 50 CDs as a sideman. Guerrini has released 6 books: 2 with a selection of his compositions by well-known label Carisch Ed, and 3 educational books dedicated to the jazz tenor saxophone. He is now an Adjunct Fellow at Monash University, teaching jazz saxophone, composition and jazz theory, and saxophone teacher at Wesley College, Brighton Grammar School and Kew High School. Mirko Guerrini has performed all over the world, touring in Japan, Canada, USA, Brasil, Indonesia, Africa, Russia and all over Europe. In Australia he formed the band Torrio! together with Paul Grabowsky and Niko Schauble. In 2016 and 2017 his project “Sound Portrait” has been hired by the Melbourne International Jazz Festival.
